Jerryd Bayless selected by the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft, then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The freshman guard is the program's ninth lottery pick since 1989.

University of Arizona men's basketball player Jerryd Bayless was selected in the 2008 NBA Draft, held Thursday at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Bayless, a 6-foot-3, 199-pound freshman guard from Phoenix, Ariz., was the 11th pick of the first round by the Indiana Pacers.

His rights were then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in a multiplayer deal.

He was voted a second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated, a third team All-America selection by rivals.com and a fourth-team pick by collegehoops.net. Bayless averaged 19.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in 30 appearances last season.

He shot 45.8 percent from the field and a team-leading 83.9 percent from the free throw line. Bayless finished in double figures 27 times this year, including 12 20-point and four 30-point games.

No freshman in Arizona history has ever scored as many points in a season as Bayless. Additionally, he became the first player in Arizona history to score 30 or more points in three consecutive games.

Bayless is the eighth Arizona underclassman to enter the draft early and be selected since 1991, joining Brian Williams (1991), Mike Bibby (1998), Gilbert Arenas (2001), Richard Jefferson (2001), Michael Wright (2001), Andre Iguodala (2004) and Marcus Williams (2007).

Bayless is the 60th Arizona product to be selected in the NBA Draft since 1948. He is also the 15th first-round draft pick in school history.
