Education Launches New Lecture Series
Luis C. Moll
Luis C. Moll, a UA teaching, language and sociocultural studies professor, is presenting the inaugural speech in the Ernest W. McFarland Lecture Series.
A new lecture series is being launched in the College of Education to commemorate former Arizona Gov. Ernest W. McFarland and to promote discussions about educational policy and reform.
Jeffrey F. Milem, the UA College of Education associate dean, launched the Ernest W. McFarland Lecture Series with funds from his endowed professorship.
Milem, also a professor in the Center for the Study of Higher Education, was named the recipient of the Ernest W. McFarland Distinguished Professorship in Leadership for Education Policy and Reform in 2008.
The late McFarland, a former U.S. Senate majority leader who co-authored the G.I. Bill, also served as chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court.
During his tenure as a senator, McFarland sponsored dozens of laws, including the 1944 passage of the GI Bill and legislation that led to the Central Arizona Project being passed.
Luis C. Moll, a UA teaching, language and sociocultural studies professor, is presenting the inaugural lecture Nov. 10 at noon at the UA's Gallagher Theater, which is located in the Student Union Memorial Center. Chicano/Hispano Student Affairs, the division that supports UA Hispanic students, is co-sponsoring the lecture.
The series, which is free and open to the public, is intended to feature two lecturers each semester.
Moll's lecture, "Mobilizing Culture, Language and Educational Practices: Fulfilling the Promises of Méndez and Brown," will spotlight two important cases: the Méndez v. Westminster School District of 1946 and the connections of the case to the landmark decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education, which came about seven years later.
Moll, also a National Academy of Education member, presented the speech in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 22 during the American Educational Research Association's 2009 Brown Lecture in Education Research.
The association also honored Moll for his body of research, particularly for developing the "funds of knowledge" model, which considers the social networks and resources Hispanic families rely on, which then aid in the education of their children.
