Family Weekend Gets Kicked Off

The campus community and its family and friends are invited to attend Family Weekend, which begins at the UA this week.
Hundreds of people are expected to attend the UA's Family Weekend events, which get kicked off this week.
Musical performances, a campus-wide barbecue, receptions and a major golf tournament are among the events that compose Family Weekend, a traditional event at the University of Arizona.
Family Weekend is a chance for UA students to invite family and friends visit the campus and explore the University through a wide range of activities and programs.
Online registration is closed, but individuals may still register to attend Family Weekend events, many of which are free, on the UA Mall.
The event begins Oct. 15 at noon the first Parents & Family Association Golf Tournament, which will be held at La Paloma Resort & Spa's Jack Nicklaus Signature course. Registration is $200 per person and sign up is available via the association's Web site.
Registration includes lunch and proceeds benefit campus safety by funding programs like Safe Ride and Safe Walk.
Other highlighted events during Family Weekend include the UA football game against Stanford, which will be held Oct. 17.
A pre-game ZonaZoo Tailgate party will be held at 4 p.m. that day on the UA Mall, and the Family Weekend BBQ will follow the game with a fireworks display at the end of the night.
Family Weekend will conclude with the Send Off Brunch, which will be held Sunday in the Student Union Ballroom 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $10 for students and $20 for parent.
The full schedule includes social events, art exhibitions, campus tours and a range of other events geared toward members of the Wildcat Family. Events include:
Oct. 16
10 a.m.: The Kick-Off Fair will be held through 3 p.m., along with the Family Weekend Vendor Fair.
10 a.m.: The Wildcat World Fair will be held through 7 p.m. Hosted by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona, the fair will run through 5 p.m. representing about two dozen student clubs and organizaitons and music, dance and food.
2 p.m.: A drop-in reception for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning, or LGBTQ, students and families will be held until 4 p.m.
5 p.m.: Bear Down Friday will be held along East University Boulevard through 7 p.m.
5: 30 p.m.: The Hillel Shabbat Dinner will be held.
7: The Union Gallery will hold a reception.
7: The Steward Observatory will hold a stargazing event, weather permitting.
Oct. 17
11 a.m.: The Honors College will hold its Convocation, marking the official welcome for students and their families.
1: The ZonaZoo Tailgate will be held through 4 p.m., at the start of the UA Wildcats football game against the Stanford Cardinal. The Family Weekend BBQ will be held after the game.
Oct. 18
10 a.m.: The Send Off Brunch will be held through 1 p.m.
