Free Law Camp Offered This Summer

College of Law

The James E. Rogers College of Law is hosting a four-day summer camp for area students who want to learn about the legal field.

The UA James E. Rogers College of Law is offering a summer camp at no cost to students who are interested in learning about the legal profession.

UPDATE: Since the publication of this story, an overwhelming number of applications have come in for the Arizona Law Camp. Applications are no longer being accepted.

A summer camp being held at The University of Arizona will inform students about professional law work and what lawyers do.

The UA's James E. Rogers College of Law is currently taking applications for its sixth annual Arizona Law Camp, which is geared toward high school students.

With funding from the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education, the law school is able to offer the camp at no cost to participants.

The camp will be held July 30 through Aug. 4 at the law college, located at 1201 E. Speedway Blvd. The camp will run 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

Students will learn legal principles, consider issues faced by lawyers and will be called to articulate and defend their perceptions about a range of topics.

The hands-on summer camp will involve students in discussions and debates on law, particularly current issues, such as whether school principals can conduct locker searches and why the Supreme Court has the ability to dismiss certain laws.

At the end of the camp, students will conduct a mock trial.

The summer camp is being taught by UA law students, who are being supervised by law professors Kenney Hegland and Paul Bennett.

Hegland, a UA professor emeritus of law, is the author of "Introduction to the Study and Practice of Law", a book used by students in many of the country's law schools. He also produces law-related videos that are distributed nationally for educational purposes.

Bennett, a clinical professor of law directs the UA law school's Child Advocacy Clinic and is a national leader in clinical legal education.
