UA to Discontinue Relationship With Russell Corporation
University of Arizona President Robert N. Shelton has recently notified the Russell Corporation that it will terminate its trademark licensing agreement, which was slated to expire on March 31, 2010.
As a UA-licensed vendor since 1995, Russell Corporation manufactured and distributed fleece, T-shirts, outerwear, women's apparel, youth apparel, polo shirts and athletic shorts bearing the University's name and registered trademarks.
Russell was one of the UA's top revenue-producing trademark licensees in recent years.
The decision to terminate comes after the Fair Labor Association reported that Russell had failed to achieve implementation of a remediation plan to address concerns over violations of the associational rights of workers in the closure of Russell's Jerzees de Honduras factory.
Freedom of association is a specific requirement of the University's Labor Code of Conduct. Despite the termination, the University continues to encourage Russell to fully implement the FLA's remediation plan and standards, and has indicated its interest in reconsidering the termination decision if Russell can demonstrate full compliance.
