The UA's Eller College of Management is hosting a conversation with experts about the current state of the economy.

With what is being considered one of the darkest periods on Wall Street currently underway, one University of Arizona college is hosting a discussion about the nation's financial markets and economy.

Stocks took a nosedive on Monday when the Dow dropped more than 770 points for an all-time loss. This came on the heels of concerns about the economic situation in the United States given the credit crunch, struggling housing market, high gas prices, loss of jobs and numerous other factors.

The UA Eller College of Management's timely economic roundtable discussion will be held 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Berger Auditorium located at McClelland Hall, 1130 East Helen Street.

The event brings together three Eller experts who will talk about what is happening in the United States economy, what predicated thie recent crisis and how it will affect the average family.

“All eyes are on the financial markets these days," said Paul Portney, the Eller College dean, who will serve on the panel.

Portney, along with UA finance department head Christopher Lamoureux and bestselling author and economist Gerald J. Swanson, also will discuss what the future may hold. in the informal economic symposium, which is free and open to the public.

Eller College has about 5,300 undergraduate and 680 graduate students, making it the second largest college at the UA. Eller's management information systems program is ranked fourth nationally and its entrepreneurship program has been named the best public program in the country.

"The Eller College aspires not only to educate its students, but also to contribute to the community in which it’s located," said Portney, who holds the Eller College’s Halle Chair in Leadership.

"By making our experts available to the public, we hope to explain how this mess came about, how it affects the ordinary citizen and what to expect in the days ahead," he said.

Portney became the UA college's dean in 2005 after having been president and CEO of Resources for the Future, a non-partisan think-tank in Washington, D.C., that specializes in energy and the environment.

Lamoureux, a Diamond Professor at the Eller College, is an expert in economic theory, financial intermediation, financial markets, investment banking and corporate finance, among other areas.

Swanson, who holds the Thomas R. Brown Chair in Economic Education, authored "“Bankruptcy 1995: The Coming Collapse of America and How to Stop It.” The book spent nearly 40 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
