National Public Radio humorist and best-selling author David Sedaris will read from and sign his new book of essays, "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" on Tuesday, July 1 at The University of Arizona BookStore.
Sedaris is a Grammy Award-nominated American humorist, writer, comedian and radio contributor. He came to prominence in 1992 when NPR broadcast his essay "SantaLand Diaries." As of 2008, his books have collectively sold 7 million copies.
Sedaris will begin with a reading at 5 p.m. at the stage area on the main level of the UA BookStore located at the Student Union Memorial Center. After the reading he will sign copies of his book.
The BookStore will have copies of “When You Are Engulfed in Flames” for purchase at a 20 percent discount.
About " “When You Are Engulfed in Flames”
Sedaris is known for his remarkable ability to uncover the hilarious absurdity teeming just below the surface of everyday life. His world view is elevated to wilder and more entertaining heights than ever with his new book of essays.
Sedaris captures the bizarre conundrums of daily life such as the etiquette of having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a fellow passenger or his use of LP covers to soundproof windows against neurotic songbirds but he also uses the absurd to capture the most deeply resonant human truths.
These truths are back dropped against his experience in taking in the parasitic worm that once lived in his mother-in-law's leg, in an encounter with a dingo, in the purchase of a human skeleton and culminates in a brilliant account of his attempt to quit smoking – in Tokyo.
