Going Green: The UA Celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day

The Sustainability Fair, happening on the Mall on Wednesday, will commemorate Earth Day.

The University of Arizona community will join the millions of people around the world celebrating Earth Day at an on-campus Sustainability Fair – an event designed on provide practical ways to become more environmentally responsible.

Sponsored by the UA Campus Sustainability Committee, Residence Life, the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership and the UA Farmers’ Market, the Sustainability Fair will be held Wednesday, beginning at 10 a.m., on the campus mall.

Dozens of interactive exhibits and vendors will offer information about energy consumption, food and water quality and recycling.

Several large-scale attractions also are planned. The Arizona Student Recycling Association is partnering with furniture retailer IKEA to bring a giant, fully furnished “sustainability maze,” providing practical knowledge and tips on creating a more sustainable lifestyle in a dorm or home.

In addition, the Campus Sustainability Committee will be conducting the first UA “Tap Water Challenge,” which allows visitors to test their water knowledge as Tucson tap water goes head-to-head against a variety of bottled waters. This event, which will include prize giveaways, is designed to foster critical thinking about water sustainability.

Event participants also will be encouraged to make an Earth Day responsibility pledge. Residence Life and the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership will host a booth where students, faculty and other visitors who share a concern for environmental responsibility can sign a 20-foot pledge wall. The pledge wall will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sustainability Fair exhibitors will include the UA Farmers' Market, local retailers and entrepreneurs, UA departments and student organizations.

KAMP Student Radio will be broadcasting live from the Mall stage from noon to 1 p.m., followed by presentations by student groups and faculty on the importance of Earth Day and sustainability goals from 1-2 p.m.

The Earth Day Celebration and Sustainability Fair will conclude at 4 p.m. with the interactive “Chill Out” climate change webcast presentation at the Park Student Union.

All Earth Day events are free and open to the public.
