Richard Kissling, former associate dean of The University of Arizona Honors College, died April 5 at the age of 68 after a long battle against diabetes, leukemia and heart disease. A memorial service will be held in the patio of Slonaker House on Friday at 1 p.m.

Kissling completed his bachelor's degree in mathematics and chemistry at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, in 1961. He received a doctoral degree in physical chemistry in 1968 from the University of the Pacific. He was an assistant professor of chemistry from 1968-69 at California State Polytechnic University before joining Heidelberg College, where he taught for 10 years.

Kissling spent 25 years at the UA, 18 of them at the Honors College, from which he retired as associate dean in July 2005. He taught two honors colloquia regularly, "The Spirit of Inquiry" and "The Examined Life," and started the Forum Lunch series to provide a venue for student-faculty interaction and research sharing.

He will be remembered for touching the lives of countless students, advising them in times of trouble and triumph, celebrating their successes, and providing caring, individual attention to each and every one.

Kissling is survived by his wife, Pat; his son, Ken; his daughter, Carol; his son-in-law, Rich Jacobsen; and his guide dog, Orea. He also is survived by his brother, Robert Kissling, and his sister, Jo Clark.
