Janice Cervelli, a landscape architecture professor and former dean at Clemson University, will succeed Charles Albanese.

The new dean at the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at The University of Arizona represents two notable firsts for the school.

Janice Cervelli will become the first woman to head CALA, as well as the first dean to come from landscape architecture. Cervelli, a professor of landscape architecture and a former dean of architecture, arts and humanities at Clemson University in South Carolina, will succeed Charles Albanese on July 1, pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents.

Clemson, like the UA, is a land grant institution. Cervelli, an expert on development, sustainable communities and urban design, has been there since 2000, where she also was founding director of the Clemson University Restoration Institute.

Prior to Clemson, Cervelli was associate dean of undergraduate studies and professor of landscape architecture at the University of Kentucky and is past president of the American Association of Landscape Architects. She has a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Purdue University and a master’s degree from the University of Guelph in Ontario.

"Janice Cervelli is a great choice for the deanship of College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture," said Eugene Sander, UA provost. "She brings an outstanding blend of leadership, expertise and community involvement."

Albanese, whom Cervelli will replace, has a career at the UA that has spanned four decades. He began teaching in 1967, retired in 2002 and returned to the UA in 2005 to serve as dean. During his tenure as dean, Albanese was instrumental in the completion of the college’s new building and of the new Ronald McDonald House which houses families outside of Tucson who have traveled with their seriously ill children for medical treatment. The college is planning a reception later this month to recognize Albanese and his contributions.

The UA College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture houses the School of Architecture and the School of Landscape Architecture. Architecture’s five-year bachelor’s program leads to a professional degree. The master’s degree offers post-professional concentrations in preservation studies, design and energy conservation, emerging material technologies, urban design and infrastructure or independent study.

In Landscape Architecture’s master’s degree program, students can specialize in arid lands, historic and cultural landscapes, international studies, small-town and urban revitalization, urban design, or ecotourism and sustainable development.

The college also includes the Drachman Institute, the research and public service arm of the college.
