Four Women's Basketball Players Earn Pac-10 Honors

Whisonant, Ibekwe, Njonkou and Dickey were recognized by the conference last week for their accomplishments this season.


Four University of Arizona women's basketball players – Ashley Whisonant, Ify Ibekwe, Amina Njonkou and Tasha Dickey – have received accolades from the Pacific 10 Conference.

Whisonant last week was named to the 2008 All-Pac-10 Second Team and garnered Pac-10 Defensive Team honorable mention recognition, Ibekwe earned Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honors, Njonkou received All-Pac-10 honorable mention accolades and Dickey was named a Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honorable mention.

Whisonant, from Bowie, Md., earned the first Pac-10 honors of her career in her final season in an Arizona jersey. The 5-foot-8 guard is averaging a team-high 15.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She also is averaging a team-high 37.3 minutes per contest. Whisonant ranks third in the Pac-10 in scoring average, first in assists per game, and first in minutes per game.

Ibekwe, from Carson, Calif., becomes the first Arizona freshman to be named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team since Shawntinice Polk in 2003. On the season, Ibekwe leads the team with a 7.9 rebounds per game average and 28 blocked shots, and posts 10.6 points a game. Ibekwe ranks fourth in the Pac-10 in rebounding, fifth in blocked shots (1.22 bpg), ninth with a 48.1 field goal percentage and 18th in scoring, while posting six double-doubles on the season.

Njonkou, from Foumban, Cameroon, earns the first Pac-10 honors of her career. On the season, Njonkou is averaging 13.0 points and 7.3 rebounds a game while shooting 49.3 percent from the field, the eighth best mark in the Pac-10, and is shooting a team-best 74.5 percent from the free-throw line. The 6-foot-1 forward has posted double figures in points in 21 of the last 23 games, including a span of 19 straight, and has a team-high 11 double-doubles on the season.

Dickey, from Sandy, Utah, earns Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honorable mention accolades after averaging 6.9 points and two rebounds a game in 25 minutes of action this season. The 5-foot-10 guard is also second on the squad with 36 steals, and has started in 20 games this season.
