Bayless is one of 24 student-athletes to make the final ballot for the award, which is considered one of college basketball's highest honors.

University of Arizona men's basketball player Jerryd Bayless was named to the final ballot for the John R. Wooden Award this week.

Bayless was one of 24 student-athletes included on the ballot for the award, which is given annually to "the outstanding college basketball player in the United States," according to the award's Web site, and the 10-man Wooden Award All-America team. A panel of 1,000 voters has until March 31 to cast votes.

A freshman guard from Phoenix, Bayless is averaging 20.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in 27 appearances. He shoots 46.9 percent from the field and a team-leading 83.1 percent from the free-throw line. He has finished in double figures 24 times this year, including 12 20-point and four 30-point games. He was a second-team all-Pac-10 selection and a first team all-freshman pick.

The 2008 Wooden Award winner will be announced on April 12 during a special ceremony at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. While several Wildcats have been selected to Wooden All-American teams over the years, Bayless would be the first Arizona player to win the award since forward Sean Elliot in 1989.
