The University of Arizona Museum of Art presents a continuation of the "From Surface to Sound" series, showcasing one-hour live music concerts devoted to the performance, discussion and creation of music compositions inspired by the visual arts. This monthly series was initiated by Timothy McAllister, acclaimed saxophonist and UA assistant professor of music, in collaboration with UAMA.
This month, "From Surface to Sound" introduces UA assistant professor of piano John Milbauer, who will present a recital pairing Arnold Schoenberg with Egon Schiele, Francis Poulenc with Stuart Davis, John Cage with Joan Miró, and Toru Takemitsu with Yves Tanguy. Encompassing 20th century movements such as Expressionism, Dadaism and Surrealism, the program will highlight works from the Museum of Art’s current exhibitions to question why visual art in the last century has enjoyed greater popularity than music arising from similar movements.
Included on the program will be Schoenberg’s Sechs Kleine Klavierstücke, Op.19 (1913), Poulenc’s Mouvements Perpétuels (1918), Cage’s Two Pieces (1948), and Takemitsu’s Pause ininterrompue (1952-1960), based on surrealist poetry by Shuzo Takiguchi. To close the program, assistant professor of voice Kristin Dauphinais will join Milbauer in a performance of John Cage’s The Wonderful Widow of 18 Springs (1942), set to texts from James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake.
