Got the Bug?

Dr. Steven Paul of UA Campus Health meets with students.
The cold and flu season has packed the waiting roomsof local clinics; UA health officials have some advice.
You’ve seen it on the news. You may be unlucky enough to have experienced it firsthand. Crowded hospital and clinic waiting rooms are a sure sign that the cold and flu season is well under way. Other ailments going around are causing respiratory infections, gastrointestinal distress and other symptoms.
Officials from The University of Arizona Campus Health Service have some advice on protecting yourself, and protecting others from the sickening array of respiratory bugs going around.
A good defensive strategy includes frequent handwashing with soap and water, and using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Contagians like cold and flu viruses gain easy entry through the eyes, nose and mouth, so avoid touching those areas with your hands. Get lots of rest, stay hydrated and eat nutritious food.
Flu shots aren’t a bad idea either. You can check on the availability of flu vaccine and schedule an appointment at 520-621-9202.
Above all, health officials say, stay home if you’re sick. You’re not doing yourself any favors by showing up for class or work. And there’s a real risk you’ll “share” your illness with those around you, or those who come in contact with whatever you’ve already coughed on or touched.
And if you are very sick and think you might need help, get medical care right away.
UA students can schedule an appointment at Campus Health either by stopping by the office in Highland Commons any time between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays), or by calling 520-621-6490. After hours, call 520-570-7898 and ask to speak with the after-hours on-call provider.
