Several Phoenix Mission Marketing Projects Win ADDY Awards

UA art student Edgar Mendoza Jr. won a student gold ADDY for his "Stars Mentoring Project" poster.

The honors include best of show and best student judge's award.


The Tucson Advertising Federation honored seven Phoenix Mars Mission projects produced by The University of Arizona Office of External Relations at its annual awards ceremony, including two best-of-show winners.

Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation, the local ADDY® Awards is the first of a three-tiered, national competition. The competition is to recognize and reward creative excellence in the art of advertising. Local best-of-show winners are eligible for district-level ADDY competitions.

The eight-minute video "Up from the Ashes" won a Gold ADDY and Best of Show in broadcast at Satruday's awards ceremony. The video was produced by the Office of External Relations in partnership with Tucson-based Firehouse Pictures.

A commemorative poster featuring a HiRISE image of Chasma Boreale won a Gold ADDY and Best of Show in print. The team that runs the HiRISE – or High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment – camera orbiting Mars is based at the UA.

The 2007 calendar featuring a HiRISE image of Russell Crater on Mars and the black-and-white print ad "The University of Arizona is taking Phoenix to Mars" both won Gold ADDY awards.

The "Mars Cat" logo designed for the Phoenix Mission launch event at the Pima Air and Space Museum, and a publicity photo of Phoenix Mission principal investigator Peter Smith superimposed on a HiRISE image of Victoria Crater, both won Silver ADDY awards.

The "UA Marching Band Goes to Mars!" video of the Sept. 15, 2007, football halftime show that featured the UA Marching Band won a Bronze ADDY.

The UA is the first public university to lead a mission to Mars. The Phoenix Mars Mission is scheduled to land on the Red Planet on May 25.

Occurring in conjunction with the prestigious ADDY Awards, the Student ADDY Awards recognize and reward creative excellence by students.

UA School of Art student Maria Thomas was awarded the Best Student Judge's Award.

Thomas and UA School of Art students David Holt and Edgar Mendoza Jr. won Student Gold ADDY awards; Jennifer Kearney, Holt, Evangelina Orduno, J.P. Peer and Margaret Cecily March won Student Silver ADDY awards; and Peer, March and Eleonor Leon won Student Bronze ADDY awards.
