Emory Sekaquaptewa will be formally remembered at a March 9 gathering in Tucson.


A gathering to celebrate the life and legacy of Emory Sekaquaptewa, a noted research anthropologist at The University of Arizona’s Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology, will be held March 9.

Sekaquaptewa was a Hopi educator, judge, artist and cultural treasure who spent nearly four decades at the UA, where he taught courses such as Hopi Language and Culture. He died on Dec. 14 at the age of 79.

The memorial will be held March 9 at 11 a.m. at Al-Marah Arabian Horse Farm, 4101 N. Bear Canyon Road in Tucson.

A brief formal program will be followed by refreshments and statements by guests. All are welcome.

Individuals are invited to make brief, three-minute statements. Groups and organizations that wish to specially acknowledge Sekaquaptewa are invited to display Tribute Tables and are asked to contact Mary Sekaquaptewa at 520-323-8881 in advance to make arrangements.
